This 4-year public university is the conglomeration of 4 individual schools: East Florida Seminary in Ocala, FL, Gainesville Academy, Florida Agricultural College in Lake City, South Florida Military College in Bartow, all relocated to the 2000 acre Gainesville campus in 1905. Gainesville is a leader in the solar energy generation and was among the first to institutionalize private electricity generation to “feed the grid.” Gainesville is also where Gatorade was invented for the University football team in the 1960’s. Notable alumni of Florida include Senator Marco Rubio, NFL players Emmit Smith and Tim Tebow and singer/songwriter Stephen Stills.
